Job Description

Responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance and management of Grain Field Chickens’ Occupational Health Program and Occupational Hygiene. The incumbent will also be responsible for the overall implementation of strategies aimed at minimizing occupational health risks in a cost-effective way, with the main objective being the protection of people’s lives.

Job requirements

  • Grade 12 or NQF 4 equivalent.
  • Diploma in General Nursing, Psychiatry, Community Nursing and Midwifery.
  • Current registration with the South African Nursing Council, with Occupational Health registered as an additional qualification required.
  • Indemnity and current (not expired) registration with SASOHN required.
  • Certificate in Audiometry and Spirometry required.
  • Registration with SASOHN as an Audiometrist required.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in Occupational Health.
  • Experience in FMCG/ a Poultry Abattoir will be an advantage.
  • A dispensing licence will be an advantage.
  • Certificate in HIV/AIDS counselling & testing will be an advantage.
  • Advanced Microsoft Office.
  • CB – Code B driver’s license.
  • Must be able and willing to work overtime when required.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Provision of medical surveillance services:
  • The OHNP must follow Grain Field Chickens standards and procedures for medical surveillance processes.
  • Plan Medical Surveillance Programs for Grain Field Chickens.
  • Form part of the team to formulate Medical Surveillance Policy.
  • Conduct pre-employment medical examinations in accordance with the OREP (Occupational Risk Exposure Profile).
  • Conduct pre-placement and transfer medicals in accordance with OREP.
  • Provide a baseline health status and determine fitness for duty.
  • Conduct periodic health screening to detect early signs of target organ damage related to specific health hazard exposure.
  • Identify and ensure early and prompt intervention measures to affected employees and referrals to appropriate OHMP/ Doctors.
  • Ensure reporting of and assisting with all injuries on duty and occupational diseases to the Compensation Commissioner via WCA.
  • Conduct exit medicals to detect and exclude possible occupational diseases related to occupational exposure.
  • Assess the health status of workers.
  • Assess workers’ ability to work.
  • Present recommendations to the line manager as well as the OHMP.
  • Medical records should be recorded and signed.
  • Determination of health control measures:
  • Conclude multi-disciplinary health risk and occupational injury assessments.
  • Monitor work processes and identify new health risks.
  • Evaluate Occupational Hygiene Surveys and identify trends.
  • Where required, provide specialist input into the compiling of man-job task specifications for all activities required by specific jobs.
  • Identify and provide recommendations regarding the control of health and safety risk exposures.
  • Compile individual and group occupational health risk exposure profiles.
  • Monitor compliance with recommendations on first aid and emergency preparedness procedures.
  • Co-ordinating and maintaining occupational health services:
  • Ensure a continuous supply and availability of suppliers, equipment and medication.
  • Plan, organize and evaluate occupational health services for area of responsibility.
  • Ensure compliance and incorporating relevant legislation into occupational health service provision.
  • Communicate and ensure the maintenance of right-to-know in accordance with legal requirements.
  • Compile and maintain a data base of medical records for all Grain Field Chickens employees and contractors.
  • Provision of professional expertise on incapacity/ disability case management:
  • Co-ordinate case management of incapacitated employees.
  • Assess, monitor and provide support to incumbents with medical problems impacting on work ability.
  • Facilitate the rehabilitation of employees after medical conditions impacting on job and ensuring appropriate job modification or accommodation, in consultation with your line manager as well as the Disability/ Incapacity Committee consisting of the Clinic, HR and SHEQ Departments.
  • Provision of occupational health service advice and recommendations:
  • Provide a consultancy and advisory service to line management and Grain Field Chickens employees on occupational health matters.
  • Identify trends related to specific hazard exposures and ensuring preventative measures are implemented.
  • Co-ordinate and provide guidance on ill health retirement process through the Disability/ Incapacity Committee.
  • Provision of a limited primary health care services:
  • Monitor chronic illness management including follow-up and counselling.
  • Treat minor ailments and injuries where feasible and refer to other resources when necessary.
  • Provide care and support for certain diseases based on business imperatives e.g., HIV/ AIDS.
  • Monitor and control chronic conditions impacting a worker’s ability to perform their tasks.
  • Stabilize medical emergencies and refer to hospitals or clinics i.e., IODs.
  • Recommend the provision of certain vaccinations relevant to work exposure and business imperatives e.g., Hepatitis B and Flu vaccinations.
  • Coordinate Health Promotion and Wellness Drives:
  • To ensure health promotions are done in order to prevent disease and to change behaviour according to the need of the employee as identified through the nursing process.
  • Planned Health Preventative Programs – choose relevant topics according to trends and indicators both locally and nationally.
  • In conjunction with the Human Resources Department, develop, maintain and drive an Annual Employee Wellness Program linked to the Annual Year Plan.
  • Draw up an Annual Year Plan at the beginning of each year, in conjunction with line manager, the OHMP and Human Resources Department.
  • Plan and implement Employee Wellness Day events:
  • Plan and implement Wellness Day Programs aligned to the Clinic Year Plan, ensuring screening of employees and follow–up.
  • Liaise with internal & external service providers (such as Kaelo, Right-to-Care, Dept. of Health, Local Clinic & Hospital etc.), and partner with them in the rendering of services not provided by Grain Field Chickens, and as part of the Wellness days.
  • Document and write Final Report/s related to the Wellness Day events/ events.
  • Occupational Health Project Management:
  • Plan, organize, implement and drive Occupational Health-related projects linked to the Clinic Annual Year Plan and Wellness Programs such as (but not limited to):
  • Health promotions.
  • HIV Management.
  • Medical Surveillance.
  • Incapacity Management.
  • TB and STIs.
  • Cancer etc.
  • Provide Awareness and Education:
  • Provide Awareness and Education initiatives on matters related to Occupational Health through-out the year such as (but not limited to):
    • Updates and/ or changes to Occupational Health Legislation.
    • Hazards/ Risk Control.
    • Health & Safety etc.
  • Workplace Health and Hygiene:
  • Do monthly occupational health-related walk-abouts with the Health & Safety Department.
  • Where practical and possible, also participate in plant walk-abouts with management.
  • Together with the OHMP, do regular hygiene inspections of areas such as (but not limited to), ablutions areas and write Reports for action to be taken on observations and recommendations.
  • Update the Health Risk Assessment on a bi-annual basis and submit a Report with action plans where applicable.
  • Participate in internal and external audits where required.
  • Responsible for the management and handling of all COVID Cases in the workplace.
  • Crisis management/ Management of medical emergencies:
  • Form part of the team to formulate emergency protocol.
  • Ensure the emergency protocol is communicated to the appropriate role players and also displayed.
  • Ensure limited primary health care is provided as agreed with the OHMP and management.
  • Ensure the necessary medication and equipment is always available in the Clinic Emergency Kit.
  • During an emergency/ crisis:
  • Prioritize and triage which situation is to be dealt with first, thereafter delegating activities to trained first aiders and emergency response staff.
  • Contact other members of the multi-disciplinary health team for further assistance.
  • Communicate continuously with the relevant parties as well as gather all the details and write a Report.
  • Management of the Clinic:
  • Ensure good administration systems and processes are in place to meet clinic’s requirements.
  • Statistical Reporting:
  • Ensure that the daily activities are documented correctly to enable logical monthly reporting and quarterly statistical analysis.
  • Compile and keep daily weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual stats according to Grain Field Chickens’ requests and needs.
  • Compile a full and comprehensive Monthly Report on KPIs related to the clinic.
  • Ensure onsite Clinic is audited on a quarterly basis by an external competent person (e.g., VKB OHNP, SHEQ Officer, SHE Administrator etc.) and forward audit report to line manager.
  • Medical waste management in accordance with the relevant legislation.
  • Ensure the Clinic supports Continuous Improvement (20 Keys), in particular but not limited to, Key 1 and Key 10.
  • Return to Work of Employees who were off work:
  • Conduct return to work medical assessment which include physical, audio, lung function and vision screening.
  • Further referral to the OHMP or other medical specialists in the area if there is a need.
  • Where applicable, ensure a fitness certificate (with recommendations from the OHMP) is issued to the line manager and the employee (the latter within legal parameters).
  • Ad hoc and miscellaneous:
  • Perform any other duties or responsibilities which fall reasonably within the ambit of the job description, or in accordance with operational requirements, as be required by management.
