Overview

Job Description

The Reporter works with the APAC digital editorial team to produce stories using a content management system, pitch story ideas, and report and write original news stories for a fast-paced, business and financial news website.

Key Responsibilities

  • Write business and financial news for the Asia-Pacific region, and specifically Southeast Asia businesses, sectors and macro-economy stories
  • Write spot news, features and trends stories for technology, including chip stocks, crypto and blockchain, as well as start-ups and venture capital funding
  • Write fast and accurate business news including breaking news; able to perform well in a fast-paced news environment and prioritize a variety of tasks while operating under tight deadlines
  • Pitch, report and write news and analysis with a focus on company-specific stocks or sectors, businesses and macroeconomics or financial markets
  • Create strong content catering to CNBC’s audience while adhering to CNBC.com’s standards of integrity, sourcing and attribution
  • Write strong and compelling headlines, as well as accurate, clean and well-structured copy under time pressure; package stories using the content management system by using pictures, graphics, charts and appropriate links to other content on CNBC.com
  • Adeptly research on financial markets and economics data for story ideas and content creation
  • Closely monitor trends in stocks, technology, trade and global politics as they impact investors and businesses
  • Work closely with CNBC.com and the TV production teams to make sure the most relevant and compelling content is produced for CNBC.com
  • Utilize social media and other tools to promote CNBC.com content

Qualifications

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Seasoned reporter with prior experience writing for a wire service, news publication or business news website preferred
  • Experience covering financial news in China, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea would be advantageous
  • In-depth knowledge of financial markets, business, geopolitical and economic news
  • Experience working with digital media and content management systems
  • Passion for news-writing; possess strong news sense
  • Familiar with data sources for research purposes; able to distinguish between primary and secondary sources
  • Demonstrable experience in writing stories with a business, markets or economics focus on a daily basis
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, able to foster good relations with colleagues as well as contacts and sources for scoops and exclusive stories
  • Fluent in written and spoken English is essential; fluency in at least one Asian language would be advantageous
  • Meticulous with an eye for detail; able to write clean, coherent and accurate copy, even during breaking news situations and under extreme time pressure
  • Proactive and takes initiative to follow up on story ideas and pitch new stories
  • Able to prioritize a wide range of tasks while operating under tight deadlines.
  • A clear understanding of CNBC’s editorial and programming priorities
  • Willing to learn and take on new tasks or assume new responsibilities as required; flexible and able to adapt to CNBC’s culture
  • Exhibit a readiness and adaptability to expand into other media, including TV, podcasts, digital video and charts or graphics
  • Self-starter with the ability to make decisions quickly in a fast-paced environment
  • A flexible attitude to working different shifts or hours occasionally when required.
  • Relevant university degree required
